Text: Algebra Concepts & Applications Glencoe McGraw Hill - $48.99
Supplies: 3-ring binder, pencils, paper
Course Description: This course is the second of two courses that teach students Algebra 1 fundamental skills. This course is the most important math course students will take in that all of the fundamental math skills needed for success in future math courses are learned in this course. We will practice the skills necessary to pass the Georgia High School graduation test, the SAT/ACT and the End of Course Test.
Course Outline: Integers, Equations, Proportions, Functions & Graphs, Linear Equations
Grading: Student grades will be calculated based on the following scales:
Tests ----------45% A------90-100
Assignments ------40% B------80-89
(notebook included) C-------70-79
Final Exam ----15% F------0-69
Assignments:
Tests: will be announced several days in advance and students are allowed to use their notes and calculators on any test.
Quizzes : may or may not be announced and will be used to determine student progress in learning the required concepts. Students may use their notes and calculators on all quizzes.
Class/Homework: Work is assigned daily and students will have a good portion of class time to complete the assignment. Students only have homework if they do not finish the assignment from class. If they have to finish the assignment at home, they must turn it in when class starts the next day.
Notebook: Students will be required to keep a notebook of assignments and will be given a notebook quiz the day before a test. Students will do well on this quiz if they do the assignments and check them each day as we discuss them in class.
Final Exam: this will be a comprehensive exam that tests the students’ knowledge of the required material. This exam will count the mandatory 15% of the students’ grade.
Make-Up Work – If you are absent then you have ONE WEEK to get everything made up. If this is not possible, then the student should consult me about other arrangements.
Extra Credit Work: Occasionally I will assign a math puzzle, extra practice problems, or a project for extra credit. Take advantage of every opportunity as they arise.
One opportunity that all students should take advantage of is getting all tests signed by a parent for 5 added points to that test grade. These really help!
Recovery Policy from the student handbook:
Provision for Improving Grades
Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance.
Students should contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to
establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the semester. All recovery work must be directly related to course objectives and must be completed ten school days
prior to the end of the semester.
Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.
CHATTAHOOCHEE HIGH SCHOOL GUIDELINES:
Recovery is available to students with a cumulative grade below 74% after a minimum of two (2) major grades. The maximum grade a student can earn for a recovery activity is 70%. There will be only one recovery opportunity per failed major assignment or test. The individual teacher will determine the means of recovery. THE STUDENT MUST INITIATE THE PROCESS WITHIN FIVE (5) DAYS OF NOTIFICATION OF A FAILING GRADE ON A MAJOR ASSIGNMENT/TEST.
Classroom Procedures & Rules:
1. Students must be in their seats when the bell rings. Failure to do so will result in a tardy.
2. No eating, drinking or chewing gum in the classroom.
3. Raise your hand to be recognized.
4. Refrain from throwing, launching or hurling anything at anytime for the safety of everyone around you.
5. Respect others, yourself and the teacher at all times.
6. Follow the teachers instructions at all times to avoid being referred to an administrator.
Tardiness: Tardiness is unacceptable. Consequences for being tardy to class:
1st & 2nd – warning
3rd – 2 days of Public Detention
4th – 1 day Saturday School
5th – 2 days Saturday School
6th – 1 day ISS
7th – Consequences to be determined by an administrator.
