Text: Algebra 1 – McDougal Littell $51.00

Supplies: 3-ring binder, pencils, paper

Course Description: This course is the most important math course students will take in that all of the fundamental algebra skills needed for success in future math courses are learned in this course. We will practice the skills necessary to pass the Georgia High School graduation test, the SAT/ACT and the End of Course Test for Algebra 1.

Course Outline: Chapters 1-6 from the text will be taught.

Grading: Student grades will be calculated based on the following scales:
Tests ----------55% A------90-100
Homework----15% B------80-89
Quizzes/Notebook--------15% C-------70-79
Final Exam ----15% F------0-69

Assignments:
Tests: will be announced several days in advance and students are allowed to use their calculators on any test.
Quizzes : may or may not be announced and will be used to determine student progress in learning the required concepts.
Class/Homework: Work is assigned daily and students will usually have a portion of class time to complete the assignment. Students are expected to do all of the homework assigned.
Notebook: Prior to each test the students will be given a notebook quiz that will ask for problems that have been assigned throughout the chapter. This is an easy grade if students do the homework and check for correctness each day.
Final Exam: this will be a comprehensive exam that is mandated by the state and tests the students’ knowledge of the required material. This exam will count the mandatory 15% of the students’ grade.

Make-Up Work – If you are absent then you have ONE WEEK to get everything made up. If this is not possible, then the student should consult me about other arrangements.

Extra Credit Work: Occasionally I will assign a math puzzle, extra practice problems, or a project for extra credit. Take advantage of every opportunity as they arise.
One opportunity that all students should take advantage of is getting all tests signed by a parent for 5 added points to that test grade. These really help!

Recovery Policy from the student handbook:
Provision for Improving Grades
Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance.

Students should contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to
establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the semester. All recovery work must be directly related to course objectives and must be completed ten school days
prior to the end of the semester.

Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.

CHATTAHOOCHEE HIGH SCHOOL GUIDELINES:
Recovery is available to students with a cumulative grade below 74% after a minimum of two (2) major grades. The maximum grade a student can earn for a recovery activity is 70%. There will be only one recovery opportunity per failed major assignment or test. The individual teacher will determine the means of recovery. THE STUDENT MUST INITIATE THE PROCESS WITHIN FIVE (5) DAYS OF NOTIFICATION OF A FAILING GRADE ON A MAJOR ASSIGNMENT/TEST.

Classroom Procedures & Rules:
1. Students must be in their seats when the bell rings. Failure to do so will result in a tardy.
2. Raise your hand to be recognized.
3. Refrain from throwing, launching or hurling anything at anytime for the safety of everyone around you.
4. Respect others, yourself and the teacher at all times.
5. Follow the teacher’s instructions at all times to avoid being referred to an administrator.

Tardiness: Tardiness is unacceptable. Consequences for being tardy to class:
1st & 2nd – warning
3rd – 2 days of Public Detention
4th – 1 day Saturday School
5th – 2 days Saturday School
6th – 1 day ISS
7th – Consequences to be determined by an administrator.
